Jinji Zhang

Originally from Massachusetts, Jinji Zhang currently studies flute with Tim Day, Principal Flute of the San Francisco Symphony. Before his studies at the San Francisco Conservatory, he studied at the Boston Flute Academy with Judy Grant who greatly inspired and influenced his love for teaching and music. Mr. Zhang is comfortable with a wide array of musical repertoire, with experience in orchestral, chamber, and soloist settings. He has performed in concert halls around the world, including Boston Symphony Hall, New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall, Harvard University's Sanders Theater, The Mozarteum in Salzburg, St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, and the Bela Bartok National Concert Hall in Budapest.

Passionate about pedagogy, Mr. Zhang took a year off during his undergraduate studies to focus on teaching. For the 2015 to 2016 school year, he was the Teaching Assistant at the Boston Flute Academy, working with flutists of all ages (ranging from 5th grade to adult amateurs) and from all walks of life. His work included conducting, coaching ensembles, presenting workshops, teaching private lessons, and teaching masterclasses.

Mr. Zhang has attended multiple summer festivals including Brevard Music Center, Aria International Summer Academy, and Pender Island Flute Retreat. He has also played in masterclasses with many esteemed flutists including Leone Buyse, Barthold Kuijken, Christina Jennings, Linda Toote, Bonita Boyd, Marianne Gedigian, Robert Dick, Paula Robison, Elizabeth Rowe, Cindy Meyers, and Fenwick Smith. Mr. Zhang was also selected to perform on NPR’s “From the Top” radio show with three other members of the BFA Young Artist Ensemble in the fall of 2011.
